The Most Popular Flowers People are Planting in Montana Right Now
Billings hit the low 80s over the weekend for the first time this year, and garden centers and nurseries across Montana were bustling with customers. After all, the urge to plant flowers in the spring is nearly impossible to resist.
We were at Gainan's Heights Garden Center on Saturday for their season kick-off party, and I had a blast watching families wander the aisles and pick out their favorite flowers.

Flowers not only brighten our decks, patios, and landscapes, but they also bring joy to the eye of the beholder. With thousands of flower varieties available, here are some of the most popular varieties Montanans love to plant.
Geraniums
This classic flower comes in several colors. It's easy to grow and quite splashy.
Fuchsia
Billings doesn't seem to have a ton of hummingbirds, but if one of those cute little birds happens to spot a fuchsia, you know they would love it.
Hanging baskets
Hanging baskets are incredibly popular. They take all the guesswork out of the equation and look fantastic.
Columbine
This delicate flower is so pretty. It self-seeds, which can be a bonus for some gardeners.
Roses
Despite their undeserved reputation for being slightly difficult to grow, rose bushes remain a popular flower in Montana backyards.
Verbena
Verebena comes in several hues, including multi-colored. Fun fact: The verbena buds can cause a numbing/tingling sensation when eaten. Mixologists have incorporated them into cocktails.
Lilac
This old-timey flowering shrub brings back childhood memories for many Montanans. Its intoxicating scent is unmistakable.

Calibrachoa (aka Million Bells)
Similar to a petunia, Million Bells are gorgeous little flowers that add a burst of color to any design.
Impatiens
I was today years old when I realized they are not called Impatients, but Impatiens. #TheMoreYouKnow.
Marigold
Marigolds are another classic flower that grows extremely well in Montana. I use them for companion plants around the perimeter of my vegetable garden, as marigolds deter a variety of pests.
Black petunia?
I'm not sure how popular these little beauties are, but my camera didn't do them justice. I had never seen them before, and they are gorgeous.
Strawflower
This Mohave Fire Red Bracteantha is a showstopper.
