If State Avenue in Billings is part of your daily routine, here’s some news you’ll want to know.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) wants to inform drivers about a proposed resurfacing project for State Avenue and is seeking your feedback before making any final decisions.

Where the Roadwork Is Planned

MDT is considering resurfacing about 1.5 miles of State Avenue in southeast Billings, from 1st Avenue South east to near the intersection with 27th Street. If you drive this route, live nearby, or just know every bump and crack, this project is designed with you in mind.

What Maintenance Will Happen

This isn’t a full tear-up-and-replace project. The plan is to chip seal, crack seal, apply a fog seal, and upgrade pavement markings. In plain English, it’s all about making the road smoother, safer, and last longer for your daily drive.

Why Take Care of State Avenue Now?

The big idea is simple: fix up the pavement now so you can avoid bigger, messier construction projects later. Preventative maintenance like this helps the road last longer and, hopefully, saves everyone from future traffic headaches.

When Could You See Construction?

Right now, everything is still in the planning stage. If all goes well, construction could begin in 2027, subject to design details and funding. The good news for locals: MDT says no new right-of-way is needed and no utility relocations are expected, so the impact should be minimal.

How You Can Share Your Thoughts

Here’s where you come in. MDT says they want to hear from people who actually use State Avenue. If this road matters to you, whether for your commute, your business, or your neighborhood, now’s the ideal time to chime in.

You can submit comments online through MDT’s comment form, or mail them to the Montana Department of Transportation Billings office at PO Box 20437, Billings, MT 59104-0437. Don’t forget to reference project UPN 10704000 so your feedback reaches the right people.
